Perspective…what an interesting word. Am I being sarcastic? Maybe a little, but don’t you agree it’s a bit ambiguous? I mean people are open to defining it however they want. When I think harder about the word, perhaps its definition is confusing to me because perspective comes down to experience and how you navigate through life (or try to, that is) and that can vary considerably.
Why am I bringing this topic up? Well, I have to confess that I am in a Bearcat class that will have an anniversary this year at homecoming…it’s been a whopping FIVE years since we graduated, which is CRAZY to me. Now, for those of you older alums, yes, I’m being dramatic, but those five years are roughly a fifth of my life.

As I ponder over my lunch break what I am doing at 26, a quote that I keep on my wall catches my eye and makes me chuckle. “Hakuna Matata.” Perhaps The Lion King and memories of my three-year-old self can still teach me things.

I hope it is safe to say that we can officially say hello to spring (thank goodness it arrived)! As the Class of 2017 already is well aware, this month not only brings about nicer weather, but also great change – indeed, an interesting smorgasbord of both excitement and sadness.

Greetings, readers, and happy almost (depending on when this gets posted) March. Honestly, where does the time go? Valentine’s Day decorations are out and Saint Patrick’s Day and Easter decorations are up and overwhelming stores. However, before the spring holidays come into full swing, I would like to share with you a book that was recently brought up through work, called Heroic Leadership by Chris Lowney. In a nutshell, it is a book that teaches the four main Jesuit leadership principles that have ensured the Society’s success for the past 450-ish years. Now, I know very well that Saint Vincent is a Benedictine school, but hear me out here. Each religious order brings its own positive thing to the world, and despite the Benedictines and Jesuits being very different, they both are very good at what they do.

How did I get here?
This is something I ask myself almost weekly at this point in my life. I finally landed my dream job as the Assistant Director of Business Affairs for the Naval Academy Athletic Association in Annapolis, Maryland, just a few months ago in September 2016. The title may sound fancy, but in essence I just do all of the accounting and finances for all of the Naval Academy sports teams … which I find pretty cool, actually. But trust me when I say, things weren’t always this smooth sailing. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that knows me, because I am probably the least graceful, most uncoordinated person on the planet.

Flash back to one year and nine months ago: I was just a normal college undergrad accepting her diploma and hoping to start the next chapter of my life in the real adult world. What I didn’t know was how since walking across that stage my life would change drastically. Like many graduates, I applied for jobs, hoping for the call to interview and waiting to hear if I got it.

Happy 2017, everyone! Although I’m a little behind in posting this month, I do hope you all had a wonderful holiday and restful break (and for those of you who just returned from break, we are jealous)! I don’t know about anyone else out there, but I still find it hard to believe it is a new year already. Where did 2016 go? Ideally, the weeks off not only provided a chance to relax, but also a chance to reflect and process through the achievements and challenges the past year gave you. Hopefully, your successes and positives outweighed the negatives but, if not, you wonderfully have the opportunity for a fresh start.

Happy December, y’all! I don’t know about you, but this month tends to be one of my favorite times of the year (minus a lot of snow). From running chaotically to various get-togethers, to having awkward small talk with distant relatives (Me: “Yes, Cousin Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, the Midwest is great for meeting people!” [shoves cookies into mouth in order to avoid talking]), the holidays can be absolute madness. Despite the crazy scheduling, I love the bonding opportunities with friends and family that abound in the next few weeks. Last month, we focused on gratitude as an overarching theme for this series. As for this month, with the snowfall in full swing, I would like to introduce a different topic to focus a few thoughts on: Stewardship. A quick Google search for the definition of stewardship resulted with “the management or care of something.” While this term is used A LOT in my department (Special Events & Stewardship), it can be a little ambiguous as to what exactly stewardship or stewarding something is. What it really boils down to are relationships and how we foster and grow them — something we tend to do naturally throughout this Christmas season.

Hello from Indiana, SVC community! My name is Megan, and I am a 2013 graduate of Saint Vincent College. Although I am three years into the “real world” and seemingly a little removed from my initial collegiate experience, it is so nice to know that I am still connected to a place I call home. So first things first, why am I writing to you? Because it is not only important to increase your knowledge while you are in a higher education setting, but to also expand your perspectives, stretch yourself, grow your network and refine what living a life of impact means to you. Never in a million years did I think I would be approached by my alma mater to give my perspective on life after school; more specifically, how my experience at Saint Vincent College prepared me for my goals, dreams and accomplishments (and how your experience will too)! Overall, I am greatly looking forward to helping students try and navigate the waters of post-college life. Even though I tend to lean toward the perfectionist side, I’m sure this blog will not be perfect and it might not always be pretty, but I can guarantee it will be authentic, candid and genuine.

Four new Darien volunteers and me after their official swear-in ceremony.
All Peace Corps volunteers commit to 26-27 months abroad- 2-3 months of training and then two years of service in their host community. Though the experience is truly wonderful and life-changing, most volunteers are more than ready to head home at the end of those long 26 months. There are some volunteers, however, that just aren't quite ready to leave yet.
